he translated…kinot: In Walter Benjamin: Story of a Friendship (New York: New York Review of Books, 2003), Scholem writes: “In those days I also translated quite a bit of medieval religious poetry; I read these translations to [Benjamin] and he encouraged me to publish some of them. In connection with our numerous conversations about laments and lamentations he was particularly taken with my translation of a famous medieval lamentation about the burning of the Talmud at Paris in 1240, a rendition which I had made under the influence of Hölderlin’s translations.” The Scholem archives at the Jewish National and University Library list some fourteen biblical and medieval kinot that he translated, in addition to six other biblical translations and nine other medieval hymns. At that time I wrote a number of things which I have never published: a commentary on the Book of Jonah, another one on Job—or rather, a basis for a commentary on Jonah and Job—metaphysical reflections of mine that were suppressed.”
